What is Internet Chess Club?

The Internet Chess Club (ICC) was founded in 1995 and for many years was the premier online chess server — the place where grandmasters including Kasparov, Carlsen, and Nakamura played online and tested new openings. Its Blitzin and interface software pioneered features that other platforms later adopted.

ICC is now owned by Chess.com but continues to operate as a distinct platform. It retains a community of experienced and titled players who appreciate its established infrastructure, detailed statistics, and tournament infrastructure. The server runs on a client-server model with dedicated software as well as a web interface.

Access to ICC requires a paid subscription. It is a good choice for experienced players who want a platform with a long competitive history and a community of serious players, though younger players and beginners are likely better served by Lichess or Chess.com's main platform.
