Free Chess Club (freechess.club) is a modern web interface for FICS — the Free Internet Chess Server — which has been running since 1995 and is one of the oldest continuously operating online chess servers. FICS was the primary alternative to the paid ICC during the late 1990s and 2000s and retains a community of experienced players.

The web interface makes FICS accessible without needing to install a dedicated client, providing online play with rated games, numerous time controls, and the classic FICS community. The server has traditionally attracted a higher proportion of serious players and carries a reputation for honest ratings.

FICS is entirely free with no premium tier or paywalls. For players interested in chess history, FICS also represents where much of early internet chess culture developed, and its game archives (hosted separately at ficsgames.org) are a significant historical record.
