What is ChessFox?

ChessFox is a free chess reference website focused on cataloguing and explaining chess tactics and checkmate patterns in a clear, illustrated format. Its tactics list covers the full range of combinational motifs — pins, forks, skewers, discovered attacks, deflections, decoys, zwischenzug, and many others — each explained with board diagrams and example positions.

The checkmate patterns section is particularly comprehensive, covering named mating patterns from basic (back rank mate, smothered mate) to more exotic combinations. Each pattern is illustrated and linked to historical game examples. The site also contains strategic concept articles covering middlegame principles and planning.

All content is free to read without registration. ChessFox serves as a useful reference when you encounter an unfamiliar tactic name during study, or as a systematic study guide for working through the full library of tactical patterns.
